Seriously, tell me this isn't yoga....

There is always this discussion about what yoga is and what kind of practice is the most yoga-ish. I've always thought that yoga is more of a "where" than a "what." In other words, a more apt question than "what is yoga?" would be "where do you get your yoga?" or even more apt, "how do you get your yoga?" Tell me this diver isn't in a type of yogic state as he crosses mental and physical boundries. Hell, in ways, he pushes the idea of what is possible further and further. Mankind bennifits from this sort of yoga.

If we practice the science of yoga, which is useful to the entire human community and which yields happiness both here and hereafter – if we practice it without fail, we will then attain physical, mental and spiritual happiness, and our minds will flood towards the Self.

~Pattabhi Jois

In a way, the question of what is yoga should be re-phrased to: "what is the nature of yoga?"

In a way, the question of what is yoga should be re-phrased to: "what is the nature of yoga?

You cannot do yoga. Yoga is your natural state. What you can do are yoga exercises, which may reveal to you where you are resisting your natural state.

Eggs, Salmonella and Other Yucky Food Issues

In general, I have tended to be a little out of touch since the '08 presidential election. However, when a news item trickles it's way into my inner sanctum of cluelessness, my curiosity is sometimes sparked. An example of this is that even though a week after it happened, the " BP oil oops!" made it's way into my pretty little world, as did the whole volcano ash issue over europe.  Another was the whole "to be or not to be" a  Mosque debate near ground zero.

So apparently there's an  issue with eggs and salmonella. What's interesting to me here is not what to do about the recall. That's pretty obvious... (don't eat them!) But every time something like this happens, there's always a huge debate that spikes regarding our consumptive habits. And like many debates in this vein, emotions based on perceived knowledge tends overwhelm the empirical evidence.

I found this interview on The Conversation where Dan Benjamin talks with food scientists Dr. Donald Schaffner and Dr. Benjamin Chapman about "foodborne illness, parasites, food safety, contamination, and more." I particularly found the part of the interview about food preparation to be interesting.

Koshas: The Sheaths of Being

When it comes to getting started on your study of yoga, you'll quickly realize that resources abound. Your yoga teacher will have a totally different answer to your questions than you will find online. The shelves at Barnes and Noble are flooded with books. Some look interesting, some nefarious. So, where to begin?

Many people are interested in the history of yoga, but most people are interested in how yoga works and how to dig deeper. One of the greatest aspects of yoga is the many different flavors are available. While this is a virtue it is also a vice. There is a lot to dig through to find the flavor that's right for you.

So we have to ask, "What's the point?"

Going Inward

Awareness is the result our interaction with and experience of the outer world. This awareness can be processed at the different levels of being. The deeper the movement inward the deeper the awareness.

These sensations then become something that is either directly experienced or reacted against by the mental body. Our emotions get in the way of our directly experiencing of material reality.
